Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme (RTYDS) Introduction to Directing

Are you interested in telling stories? Thought of being a Theatre Director?
This autumn we are excited to be launching our first Introduction to Directing course. It’s free and will run on Thursdays throughout September and October.

Introduction to Directing, in collaboration with Theatre Deli, is part of the Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme and is an opportunity for people from backgrounds currently under-represented in UK theatre as a result of barriers arising from social, gender, financial, ethnic, cultural, geographic or educational disadvantage or disability.

Aimed at people who have an interest in directing and devising, this practical course will give you a feel of what it’s like to be a theatre maker. We’ll share how we make our work and the exercises we use. You’ll have the opportunity to devise, work from scripts, direct professional actors and talk to a variety of theatre professionals.

The course will:

  • Equip you with a range of practical skills for devising and developing your work
  • Offer a varied approach to directing, led by professionals
  • Develop an understanding of planning and running a rehearsal
  • Provide an opportunity for you to direct professional actors
  • Create a safe, fun space to experiment and play
  • Encourage you to challenge yourself artistically

Who can apply?

Introduction to Directing is an opportunity for people from backgrounds currently under-represented in UK theatre, and we would particularly welcome applications from people from Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic backgrounds, or those experiencing financial barriers (with a household income below £30,000 per year).

You should be based in Sheffield, aged 18 or above and not in full-time education. No previous theatre experience is necessary, but you should have a specific interest in directing rather than in acting or any other theatre craft.

How do I apply?

Email or write to our Co-Artistic Director, Rachael Walton and tell us something about you and why you would like to take part, what interests you about directing / devising and any experience you have had so far. You may answer all of the questions in a video or audio submission if you prefer, but please use WeTransfer to share your recording as this supports the transfer of larger files.

Please ensure that you provide your contact details (full name, address, phone number and email address), confirm that you are able to make all of the dates, and tell us where you heard about this opportunity.

You can email Rachael at mail@thirdangel.co.uk or write to her at Third Angel, Unit 1, Harland Works, 70 John St, Sheffield S2 4QU.

Please download our Equal Opportunities form HERE and return with your application.

If you have any questions or would like an informal chat before applying, please contact the Third Angel team on 0114 272 4974 or mail@thirdangel.co.uk

The closing date is 5.00pm, Friday 26 July 2019.
