Side By Side

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every second of it… You’ve made us feel really at ease, teaching us things regarding acting and stuff like that. It’s been another level really, yeah!” - Participant

“It is more relaxed than I ever imagined. Stacey and Rachael are great, with plenty of ideas and patience.” - Participant

“The sessions with Third Angel I found really interesting because I’ve learnt about stuff that I was previously unaware of, particularly in terms of – I suppose the role of actors.” - Participant

The sessions got talked about a lot in our usual Tuesday sessions. They were really excited about it and had so many positive things to say about it. I think they learnt a lot of new things that they haven’t done before… They really thrived.Johanna, Side by Side Director

(Feedback from the Acting for Screen workshop)

Side by Side is a community theatre group based at Sharrow Community Forum, close to the Third Angel office in Sheffield. Founded in 2008, they meet every week to perform and share a meal.

The two theatre companies first connected in 2021, and teamed up to run a 12 week series of workshops, responding to the participants’ interest in character and acting for the screen. Stacey (our Community Producer) and Johanna (Side by Side Director) worked together to facilitate each session, with input from Artistic Directors Rachael and Alex. Among many other things the group developed their own characters, worked with TV scripts, acquired techniques around learning lines and acting for camera, and shot short scenes for film.

This opportunity to break down and share Third Angel’s practice led to unexpected insights for everyone involved, as well as further connections with local community groups, and left us determined to build on the collaboration. Feedback from the group was really positive - that they had felt able to try new things and stretch out of their comfort zones.
